Ethics of Writing an Email

Hi there. Hope you guys are doing splendid. I have received a few emails from some of the readers regarding the scholarships and what annoys me the most is the lack of ethics in those emails. A lot of my friends would tell me to cut you some slack but I really hate it when people are being rude. And although the content of the emails was genuine and honest in asking about the scholarships, the way they present the questions can makes my blood boil. It was just unethical!

I know a lot of us had never learnt about email ethics back in high school but it is a very important thing to know especially since we’re living in the 21st century. You don’t want to give a bad first impression just because of your unprofessional emails.

So, I’ll share a bit on the guidance on writing an emails ( especially to the high ups, and strangers)

1. DO NOT USE SHORT HAND/FORM

using abbreviation is okay when you’re communicating with your friends but when you’re sending an email to your colleagues or the management for your scholarship or even when asking help from someone, use proper language. It makes you appear much more mature. I’ve also heard a few scholarship management teams complaint about this when applicants tried to contact them via email. So, please please please use proper English/Malay/any language that you use as a medium.

2. GREET THE RECEIVER AND INTRODUCE YOURSELF

This is very important. It’s common sense to do this no matter what. But sadly, a lot of  youth today don’t have the decency to do this. Introduce yourself as they don’t know who you are and  it would be easier for them to address you later on.

3. DON’T BE RUDE

Just don’t. You’ll give a bad first impression. Furthermore, you’ll be treated badly. You need to remember that the one who is reading your emails are people, not some artificial intelligence. They have feeling and they can be annoyed especially if the sender is rude to them.

I am truly sorry if this post offends anyone but I think this need to be said out loud. Living in an era where communication is done more virtually than face to face, I think it is safe to say that there shouldn’t be any excuse for this kind of behaviour again.

Thank you so much for reading.

About TOEFL iBT and Sample of Marked Writing Section

What is TOEFL iBT?

TOEFL iBT is an online test used to recognize the English proficiency of an international student (whose mother tongue isn’t English) to apply to a university overseas, particularly US. The TOEFL score required is based on the university you want to apply, but generally they would want at least a 79/120 (search for the university requirements). If you are planning to apply to ivy leagues (or schools with rankings somewhere at the top) they would want to see at least a 100/120.

On a Saturday at 8.00 a.m., I was already at KDU Glenmarie, the campus where my interview was held. We were led to a big hall and we handed in our documents there. We were also given a number to separate us according to the computer labs  we were assigned to do the online test.

IELTS TASK 1 SAMPLE ESSAY (Bar Chart)

The bar chart illustrates the value of exports and imports of a country in five respective years. Through analysing the data, we can clearly observe the disparities between the two throughout the years. These include the decreasing pattern in the value of imports, the slightly unstable export values and the significant difference in the total of both values after 24 years. These statistics will be elaborated in further detail in the next paragraph.

In only one out of the five years, the value of exports are slightly higher than the value of imports- which is in the year 1983. However, throughout the next few years the import values started to outweigh the export values and the gap between the two steadily increases as well. Starting off with a value of just less than 20 billion US dollars, import values had risen almost ten times higher until the year 2007, recording a mass amount of 100 billion US dollars. Export values experienced a large leap as well, but only rose to less than 80 billion US dollars with some minor fluctuations along the way.

Overall, the value of imports definitely skyrocketed between the years 1983 and 2007 while the export sales showed a steady increase as well.

Maybank Scholarship

Maybank-Logo1-720x417

Assalamualaikum wbt and hi! So, you must be curious on how the journey to acquire a scholarship from Malaysia’s number 1 bank will be. Well, not to worry. Here’s a draft of my own experience 🙂

This scholarship requires you to go through three stages. Each of the stages has their own unique way of challenging you whether you are worthy of the scholarship or not. Before applying, mind you that the scholarship has two categories. In my experience, it is best to consider first the course you would like to pursue and your total household income before choosing the best category to apply as both of them have different features. You can check afterschool.my for more details.
